Disaster Mental Health 101- 8:30 am-4:30 pm 8 hours, Participants earn certification as a disaster support counselor. Course includes general disaster mental health concepts, target populations, disaster mental health interventions, how to organize and conduct a disaster mental health response, supervision of peer disaster support counselors, working in the disaster operation, liaison with other relief organizations (eg. Red Cross), and (for Community Service Boards) how to function as the lead disaster mental health agency. Trained disaster support counselors may provide onsite, outreach, immediate response and long term recovery interventions within their own facility and community. Disaster mental health requires an integrated approach with other local disaster response resources such as Community Service Boards, American Red Cross, and emergency coordinators. A table top exercise in included at the end of the training session and it is suggested that a copy of the agency disaster mental health plan, regional disaster mental health plan and facility/county emergency operations manual be available to the instructor and participants. If a protocol for mobilization exists it will be important to include that as well. Cost: $2,500 per workshop plus travel.
